Try Stephen Ambrose`s "Citizen Soldiers",

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Citizen-Soldiers...&s=gateway

Its an oral history (from both sides) of the great day itself.

It`s a great read and has some great photo`s as well.

The Longest Day is still a great source. I brought the book with me when I did the trip a few years ago and found that even the maps in the book were still useful, and, in fact, better than some of the Michelin maps.

I would recommend Stephen Ambrose's D-Day IF you are primarily interested in Utah/Omaha. Otherwise I would avoid it like the plague.

Longest Day is still a great read and very evocative.

RE: D-Day books??
Right,

Pick up a pocket guide, I've got D-Day Beaches by Patrica Boussel.

Caen Anvil of Victory by Alexander McKee and Invasion-they're coming By Paul Carell are good for gettin the feel/atmosphere and pace of the fighting.

If you live in the USA try, US. Army in world war 2 European Theatre of Operations, 2 books.
Cross Channel Attack and Breakout and Pursuit.
Should be able to pick these up S/H and pretty cheap.

Finally if you have some cash buy D-Day then and now, 2 volume set from after the battle.
