Why would you want to? Just have you and your opponent upgrade at the same time, it won't impact ongoing games...

Sure, I have a 4 on 4 MP game going...we all updated and have continued without a hitch. Just make sure your opponent upgrades too, otherwise they will get an error when they try to open your game file.
