RE: 1914 Valour - FWWC Tournament Round 4
I'm curious what the other results will be. It seems like a scenario with 2 extremes and not much in between. Either II Army Corps is (mostly) pocketed and destroyed, leading to a comfortable Central Powers victory, or II Army Corps retreats largely intact and the Russians can run out the clock with relative ease.

To see if the Russian situation was hopeless, I played the scenario as the Allied Powers and the results was a negative score for the Central Powers. It's certainly not a guaranteed loss for the Russians.

The only hope for the Russians is to start withdrawing on turn one. Standing and fighting anywhere in the center only wears your troops down, so that the Germans can then simply march over/through them.

I am sure that the scenario is not that unbalanced, if the Russian player knows exactly what to do. My problem was that I do not really remember other scenarios where one can basically lose the whole battle in the first couple of turns without doing something obviously daft.

Interestingly, accepting a resignation as the attacker is never worth it if you can take more points given the format of the tournament. As evidenced by the resigning Russians retaining the highest points of all the Allied players.

When my opponent asked if we could stop i definitely thought about it for bit, I realized I probably would be giving up some bonus points and I was having a helluva good time. I asked myself what would sportsmanly conduct look like, should I "make" my opponent continue to play? Maybe he has a good real life reason for stopping. Not saying I made the right choice or that it's somehow ethically superior, just wanted to share my ruminations.

About the scenario itself, it strikes me that maybe the victory point stages are too tight. I went from major defeat to major victory in basically 3 turns, I was able to capture about a division's worth of troops and take i think 4 VP hexes. ComradeP was able to accomplish at least twice as much yet both of us have major victories.
