I have AGE OF SAIL 2 but I must admit, although it is beautiful to look at I was totally bored after a few days of play. I have never played it again since then.

Yeah i have AOS2 as well, playing against a real person is great...very similar to a game of chess, as long as you have all setting on realistic including time. But playing against the AI was pointless, all the AI did was sail in a straight line a shoot, no maneuvering or crew orders at all, and if the wind changed to head on the ship would just go into irons and sit there getting pounded. :hissy:

For some reason that one line in the movie always sticks in my head "hello nigger old boy" (said to his dog). Obviously in England in the 1950s it must have had a different meaning?

No, the meaning was the same.
It was a "light-hearted+ name for the dog because it was black.
It is good to see how much some of us have changed our attitudes to other races, genders etc
There is an issue with the current movie being made by Peter Jackson as to what to call the dog.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with that.
PC-ness vs reality

As my lovely girlfriend just pointed out (while reading this over my shoulder) "you cannot edit history"...unless it is "1984".

Actually, there is a fair bit of that going on as we speak...shameful.

When the film was last shown on UK TV the dogs name was dubbed to Digger to avoid upsetting anybody.

The dog was Guy Gibson's, it wasn't owned by Barnes Wallis (spelt correctly!)

Also fascinating to read that he used to take his cat Windy with him on early flights - the cat loved it !

How did you decide upon your Blitz nickname?

Epoletov is a nickname from a word an epaulette.
That soldier which is bad does not dream to become the general !

What ladders are you represented on?

My choice at present:
Steel Panthers - military technics and tactics of small divisions in detail.
HPS: Modern Campaigns - a highest level of command (Army, Divisia) and historicity of an event.

What is your favorite PC War-game?

Steel Panthers

Who has been your hardest opponent?

I still did not meet many commanders in fight.
But at me old dream to take a revenge at VLOM.

How long have you been a member of the Blitz?

One year.
On mine it is a lot of, considering those tournaments and fights lead by means of The Blitz.

What War interests you the most?

All the second world war (great domestic for us).
Because of those heroic efforts from both parties of those fights on a battlefield and in rear. And influences of this war on the further destiny of all world on many decades.

If you could choose to be present at one historical event what would it be?

Battle for Moscow in 1941.

What is your favorite War movie?

There are many excellent Soviet films which names to you probably will tell nothing (Go and look, And a dawn here silent, They battled for the native land, etc.).
From modern Russian films it: 9 Rota, the Afghani break (M.Plachido), the Purgatory (the Chechen war).
From foreign it: Platoon, Apocalypsis Now, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan.

What do you snack on while gaming?

If thirst, then kvass.
It is more than anything.


What is your favorite and least favorite aspect of the Blitz website?

All arranges me here owing to the benevolent policy of management HQ The Blitz.
The breadth of scope of wargame is pleasant.

At me is not present such raritets

What do you think was the single most important event of WWII?

Battle for Moscow.
Its falling could lead to a fast output from war and to disorder of the USSR and an establishment of domination of fascist Germany in the East Europe.
Who could stop then Hitler?

What is the most interesting documentary you have ever watched?

Documents on blockade of Leningrad.
About the gone through burdens of its defenders and their heroism.

I watched a German made film once called Stalingrad, that was very good if i remember right. Also the old B&W film Sahara starring Humphrey Bogart, which was based on a Russian story i believe called Twelve Men, is a good film.

I wish the UK telly showed more foreign films instead of constant reruns of Friends. :whis:

Film of German director Joseph Vilsmaier "Stalingrad" looked.

It was interesting to look, as suffered, of what thought, how people in those conditions operated.
Especially for me Russian, a sight at soldier Vermacht.

Still it would be desirable to note film: 84 Charlie Mopic (Vietnam War).

The first time I beat Skotty702 it felt like, and was, a real achievement. I never managed to beat Narwan, and most of the SPR crew are too tough for me………..

Das Boot possibly, there are a lot that are pretty good.

It’s a good community, often interesting discussions to be had. It would be good if a few more people contributed to discussions.

Do you own any war memorabilia?
No, my wife thinks I have far too much useless stuff already (no disrespect to memorabilia collectors)

What is the best military book you have read?
Bomber by Len Deighton. An example of fiction being a better read than fact. Deighton covers the effects of a major British bomber raid on the people who are involved, ie British aircrew, German nachjagd, civilians on both sides.

What do you think was the single most important event of WWII?
There wasn’t a single thing that can be picked out but Churchill becoming British leader was highly significant in that if he hadn’t it is likely that we would have reached some kind of accommodation with Hitler. The Russian winter was probably the biggest turning factor.

What is the most interesting documentary you have ever watched?
The World at War series………It ought to be mandatory at school, but I think these days the curriculum is more directed towards apologies for slavery than the great things in British history

What is your favorite version of Steel Panthers?
SPWW2 – ATGM’s spoil MBT a bit.

Are there any war games catching your eye at present?
No, I have given up buying “fashion items”, I’ll stick with SP thanks.
