I noticed the updates are for upgrading to Vista Operating System.

If we are still using XP do we need to download the patch in ordrer to play with an opponent who has Vista and has downloaded the patch?

Yes, both players should always be on the same version. Plus, these do more than just provide Vista compatability...see the changes.txt file.
