Operations question

What happens if you exit units off the map during one of the battles of an operation? Will they be available for the next battle?

Let's say you were in such a weak position that it would be better to withdraw off the map rather than uselessly throw away troops that could live to fight another day.

I'm pretty sure exited units are not available for future battles.
