I too am very curious about yours and Arkan's views on the P39 campaign game with Arkan.
I also do not know the Polish deployment in the campaign game you were playing with Arkan. I did play test many of the smaller scenarios. What I learned from them was the Polish have a fighting chance when facing German forces far from their starting supply positions with equally strong units. There are some excellent Polish B and C morale formations. Corseting them with the 700 men D morale divisions can bloody and even slow a German advance. The trick is where to make such a stand.
As the Polish player did you consider screening the southern forces with cavalry and any mobile units in a fighting withdrawal, while using the high railroad allotment for the Poles to evacuate less mobile units to the rear to form additional shorter lines or cover the flanks around fortifications further from the borders?
I know this would not be an easy strategy to make work. Losses could still be bad. However, if it could be done, maybe the best troops could be be positioned to fight at a later time. This would hopefully create some advantages from a disadvantage.
- Reduce casualty VP since those are based on unit quality.
- Match rested stronger units against the Germans to attrition the Germans.
- Shorten the main line of defense where you choose the ground.
Fighting from prepared positions with (relatively) secure flanks is the only way to cost the German player heavy casualties in frontal assault or at least cost time to out flank your position.
Just some ideas from my testing experience. No disagreement that playing Poland in any Poland 39 campaign game will require sange froid and determination. A lot like Smolensk 41 as the Soviet player.
