Commander of the 9th SS Hohenstaufen Panzer Division Brigadenführer Sylvester Stadler:
"A massive tank attack was impossible. The whole terrain had been turned into liquid mud in which everything was sinking. Obersturmbannführer Telkamp, a professional tank commander, personally led the fight of the best company and had to inform me that his regiment could not be used as the heavy vehicles were sinking in the mud. After the two tanks had sunk almost up to their turrets, a broad front attack by the advancing infantry could be supported by only one tank company operating on the only road in our offensive line".
