Soviets indeed had a huge army. But Soviet deep operations doctrine called for complete domination in numer of formations, not manpower per se. Tank Crops was considered a perfect balance – it was way too great concentration of tanks for standard enemy infantry units to bear, but on the other hand the formation was not huge, what allowed to create a lots of them. Do not get tricked – if you look at structure closely, entire tank corps is weaker than typical German armoured division of the era, as well as noticeably smaller than eg. US Armoured. If pitted against German armor, tank corps usually fared poorly and needed serious numerological superiority. Their true power was however in the ability to effectively engage and pin the mobile enemy units, what allowed other fast formations (such ach mechanized corps) to exploit undefended sectors. The 5th was only partly lucky – turned from Bucharest straight into southern Transylvania, it engaged towards Cluj, but encountered 23rd Panzer Division in it’s entire might. Unable to break through, it later followed into the battle of Debrecen, where entire 6th Guards Tank Army was mauled badly, but avoided the disastrous fate of the entire Plyev’s Mechanized Group. 5th Guards Tank Corps continued to be the menace of the Hungarians, advancing later on the Hungarian plain and besieging Budapest itself.
