Recon Spotting
Does selecting Recon Spotting work throughout a Recon Units entire turn or just from the hex when it is activated?

What it does is spot units in it's visual range from the hex it is in.

So if you have a recon unit behind a hill...drive him up on the hill.....spend 1/3rd your movement....and you will get to see everything you will get to see next turn, but only right away.

I find it of only limited use. Most of the time I use my recon units as screens in weaker parts of my front. Some times I will use them to 'bounce' off the enemy front lines. (Drive until I am one hex away, then move back)

To be clear, it is not guaranteed to show you everything within the recce unit's line of sight.

User Manual Wrote:...this command will attempt to spot enemy units within the Line-of-Sight of the selected units at the cost of 1/3 of the movement allowance of the units. The probability of spotting the enemy units will depend on the distance from the recon unit to the enemy unit, the terrain that the enemy unit is in, the strength of the recon unit, and its quality and fatigue.

I like using it in fluid situations, although I prefer air recon.

I like to use air recon on those '?' artillery hexes behind the lines. If it reveals the hex, they act as if spotted, and you can bomb/bombard the hex with anything that can reach. You can also hit anything in the hex.

To be honest, it appears that using recon vehicles always work...but then, that is hard to tell since the enemy will get to move on his turn. I would have to look up the percentages....

Depending on the cause of the ? unit - arty or dust - you can fire your own artillery at them without spotting with recon. Just a hint to check and see when you don't have recon available or don't want to waste it.

Actually, the reason I do it is because you do more damage if it is not a '?', with feedback to casualties and you might get lucky and catch a unit in travel mode that happens to be moving through the hex.

I believe it is only in the case of using indirect fire by the map that firepower is reduced, otherwise under standard rules, allowed to fire, it will be at full strength. But it is random as to which unit, if more than one, gets hit, so definitely recon if you suspect such a situation. Anyway, just pointing out options, if someone doesn't have any recon there is no choice but might as well know about the possibility of firing in this situation.
