When a unit is digging in, does it affect in some way it's firepower or defencive abilities?

Yes, units digging in have reduced firepower and assault values, so watch out if digging in while in the front lines with enemy near by. I will assault undisrupted digging in defenders every time I see them, if I have a strength advantage already, as it would double the advantage, or at least halve the losses I will suffer in the assault.

This also applies to artillery units. If artillery units have orders to dig in, then change orders so they aren't digging in before you fire them.
