Moscow 41 Query

Moscow 41 Query
Currently embroiled in a Typhoon campaign as German. I have just encircled a horde of Ruskies North of Moscow and envisage a quick thrust into the Northern suburbs of the city. Can anyone tell me what will happen if my troops occupy a Russian reinforcement hex in Moscow when the reinforcements are due? There appears to be many Russian units due for appearance within the city. It is a crucial issue. I am hopeful these units would not come onto the map if Moscow is under occupation.

That is will the Russians simply not appear? Or will some disaster befall my men?

After a nasty shock in TFB I am not sure what will happen. In a game of TFB I overrun vast chunks of France and rather naively left some cities ungarrisoned. Only to find a French Armoured Division roaming around in my rear after they suddenly appeared as reinforcements in a city to the rear of the front line (the city was a victory point city which I contolled but had not left a garrison since it was well behind the front). I appreciate this is a different game but the experience has left me somewhat wary to say the least!

RE: Moscow 41 Query
There is no tracking in the game of who "controls" a hex, similarly to TFB. It is either occupied or not, and objectives are tracked by which side last occupied them, that is it. From experience with Moscow, as the Soviets, there are reinforcements and they have a protection setting so they will be able to enter, no matter what you do. However, you can see the protected hexes through the game, so you deploy garrison forces around them and can easily destroy the reinforcements, if your opponent even deploys them. Best for the Soviets, as I had to do, to not even bring them on without a relief force nearby.

But I would suggest always leaving some kind of garrisons of critical areas in all games, that is quite historical!

In addition to what Ricky said. In PzC reinforcements can have PROTECTION areas around them to prevent players generally from sitting on the map edge to block units arriving. We first found this in Normandy when guys ran speedy AT units through the german lines in time to bloclk the arrival of Panzer Divisions.

If the arrival hex is NOT protected and occupied by a unit - the reinforcement will be blocked (assuming it isn't Airborne and such)

If you had sent in a file on this I could look into to for you - very hard to chase down at this point. Basicially in TFB reinforcements to arrive in city hexes and we used historical info to find these location. So I can see where this is possible. What might have been a better solution is for the reinforcment to appear earlier but deeper int he rear giving it time to more forward. That is the Nasty suprise" is not design intent and certainly won't be changed is we don't know about it.

RE: Moscow 41 Query
Thanks for the info Glenn and Ricky. I was aware of the protected hexes on the map edge. Its the entry hexes in Moscow I am unsure of. Does it mean then that if a hex in Moscow is not shaded (protected) then Russians won't appear there if I Occupy that hex?

As for TFB Glenn I can replicate the situation for you if you like and send the file. Its just a matter of me occupying a reinforcement city hex and then vacating just before the reinforcement arrives. Let me know. Again thanks for the info.
Cheers

Correct, if a hex is not marked protected, then you can deploy your units there without any danger of destruction.

I can understand where this situation could occur and obviously there in no fix within the game in general that will correct this either. But if I knew what scn and around what time in the scn(s) where this instance will occur, and if it is common that the Germans will have this place overrun by that point in the scn, then I might be able to correct this in the Scn editor. But if it an odd occurrance that made this situation happen, then there is not much I can do I am afraid.

Anyway - up to you. I can't guess what scn, what city and what point within the scn you are looking at - and I have plenty of things to do for the games so I am not looking for more<g>, but if it is a problem, I will look at if with a file. But if it is "just a matter of me occupying a reinforcement city hex and then vacating just before the reinforcement arrives" using the editor, than you can save yourself the trouble.

RE: Moscow 41 Query
Nah don't worry. Its no big deal. I have learnt simply to leave a garrison in all victory ponit cities. Its not like the Germans have a shortage of units.
Cheers
