Rommel, the Desert Fox that he is, set to do exactly that. Unknown to him, Montgomery had called a few air strikes on his armor though. Following their orders, the Royal Air Force, upon finding no high value targets in the area (such as wagons), hit his trucks instead, causing a few SP losses, and importantly a few retreats ruining the road block for him.
On another development, Rommel had his halftracks set on surround+capture Montgomery's HQ assets, but with another stroke of bad luck, the variable visibility snag (El Alamein was before 2.00, remember) caused the visibility to improve upon Monty's turn, and all Rommel's halftrack fell victim to British tankers.
Talk about rotten luck!
