I hope I'm not asking a stupid question as this is new to me. If so I apologize. If combat mission can be played via email why would a dropbox account be necessary?

The data sent can be very large.Depending on the type of game between 5-60 MB per turn.

What @Westland said plus there are automatic systems that use drop box to automatically copy files from your outgoing game folder to drop box and from drop box to your incoming game folder. So, it is way easier than sending emails.
