Can anyone identify this tank? - Jobu88 - 02-19-2016

I thought I had seen just about every tank ever put together by the Germans but I have never seen this photo until I came across it on Pinterest today.  Looks like a Pz IV -type chassis, a JagPz IV gun mantlet and I don't know what kind of superstructure.   Any thoughts?

Jpz IV/70. I think it is just the angle of the photo that makes it look like the hull of a Jpanther or Jtiger.

Interesting,  the first two photos in your link look similar with the small vertical area of the front armor, but all the rest are traditional JgPz IV without the vertical armor.   In 40+ years looking at German armor I have never seen or heard of the vehicle in question.   It has almost a JagdTiger-style superstructre, very boxy unlike the JgPz IV.

Actually.....near the bottom of the link you posted there is a side drawing that looks like a perfect match.    I guess somehow I never noticed that variant of the JgPz IV.

IT does look like a JTiger or JPanther hull doesn't it. I guess it is early production, they must have taken those hulls and used them for the 88L70

Also found this, go to bottom:

And a model kit

I think your confusion is caused by it missing the sloped superstructure pieces on the rear hull.
I, certainly, thought it was all a roofed superstructure but after a little looking found the rear is not roofed and the two sloped sections are just "Walls".

Your picture is the tenth of weasel's first link (the tank has both german and soviet markings - and the caption claims it is a soviet Jgpzr IV L/70 destroyed in Hungary.

Scorpio_Rocks,

The caption translation you quote is not quite accurate - it's all in the suffixes, a very fine distinction.  If it said "Красной Армии", then it would mean "(belonging) to the Red Army".  As it is, "Красной Армией" it means "(some action) by the Red Army".  So in full the caption says (as close to the original wording) "Destroyed by the Red Army SGC Jagdpanzer IV L/70 from an unknown unit. Hungary. German self-propelled gun carriage Jagdpanzer IV L/70.

Just to clear things a little.

Thanks for that :) - My language skills are very limited and I blame Google Translate :P
