SPMBT AMMO LIMIT - zorglub - 09-23-2011

Hello

I have a question
playing with limited ammo :
- what have I to purchase ?
- how do I use items I have bought ?

Thanks for your answers

Do you mean you are using 'AMMO LIMIT' ON in Preferences, Realism Settings?

That is the 'standard' way to play, but ammo loadouts are usually so generous that ammo shortages will probably only be an issue for certain types of weapons/rounds.

You may want to buy ammo carriers, ammo cannisters, or ammo dumps. To be resupplied units must be within 1 hex (or 2 hexes for a dump, but resupply at half rate if 2 hexes away).

Smaller warhead ammo is resupplied faster.
One unit is resupplied at a time, when that unit is full, the next unit will be resupplied.

On the 'preferences' screen, there is a toggle (button) that sets the ammo supply to limited or unlimited for that battle. It's not called that, I forget what it is called. In one position your weapons are like Hopalong Cassidy's 6 shooter. They never run out of shots. In the other position they have the rounds available to them that is indicated on the weapon line of the Unit screen.
If you mean in battle reloading, you have to have an ordinance section(ammo resupply).
You reload a unit by being in the same hex as the ordinance unit. ('shift' and click on that hex) or in 1 of the 6 hexes next to the hex the ammo resupply unit is in. Helios MUST be landed.
OFF map units can not be resupplied. What you can do is turn off a weapons slot to conserve ammo. You click on it in the unit screen and it turns blue and won't shoot. This is called blue-lining by some of us old farts. You can do it to any unit, not just off map arty and air strikes.
It's useful for when you are running short on main gun HE and are killing infantry. Blue line the main gun and you can point and click with you machine guns. Don't forget to turn your main gun back on for Op fire shots. It is also useful for keeping an enemy armored vehicle suppressed when you are trying a bump and run.

I thank you Cross and low_bidder for your answers.

Do carriers need themselves to be reloaded by dumps after they have reloaded a certain number of weapons or are they enough on the battlefield ?

All types of ammo carriers have endless amount of supply.

Thank you
Now I have to try that carriers reach units "ammo empty" without being themselves destroyed

Ammo carriers in the front lines make pretty explosions! The units you will be reloading the most are your ATGM's. That and your mortars. ATGM's come with transport, mostly. If they don't buy some. That is what all those Jeep type vehicles do. Keep the ammo units within 1 turn of MP's (movement points). Always place your ATGM's in a position where they have a way out. That means they can flee without being seen. Put the transport 1 or 2 hexes back along their escape route. You need those hexes so that area fire (z key) won't shoot up the transport. Jeeps are not tough. Once the ATGM starts taking fire, move it. Swing by the ammo unit on the way to your next ambush location and top off your magazine.
As a rule of thumb, ammo resupply becomes important in battle longer then 30 turns 20 turns or less and your normally wasting points.
