They can provide aviation support for float planes, even at dot bases (although you need to drop some supplies at a dot base to keep them flying). That is in addition to the float planes they carry on-board.

They are a good way to extend your naval searches (particularly long range Emily/Mavis/PBY types) without deploying a base force. Just watch out, cause they are vulnerable to a light surface raid if posted too far out on the fringe without adequate support.
