RE: Soccer World Cup - Remko van den Berg - 07-12-2010

The spanish team played better
but the weakest performance was made by the referee (from a dutch POV)
beside a lot of cards (a new record :-( )

A few misjudgements by Howard Webb led to the goal by Iniesta
otherwise....... we might have won

at least CBS knows who the true champion is

I think the Spanish players could have done even better had they practiced Kung Fu and went to the same level as the Dutch? ;)

RE: Soccer World Cup - Crossroads - 07-13-2010

Quite enjoyed the finale. :)

A good reminder that it takes more than a practice session or two, after Sunday School, to become a World Champion?

Rugby, the game of the scum, practiced by gentlemen
Football, the game of the gentlemen, practiced by scum

That's how a rugby playing friend of mine explained the subtle difference between the two sports once ;)

Poetic justice for Robben, for once in his life he did not cheat, and got penalised for that...

Well done Espana! Rooted the Oranje, of course cheers

RE: Soccer World Cup - Remko van den Berg - 07-13-2010

well I think that if finally a video ref is allowed in soccer just like most other sports (like hockey (NHL and on grass) rugby, NFL etc..) less fouls will be commited cause the players know they won't get away with it,

and no unjustice will be done (like lampard's goal against germany)

the Dutch team of the 70's got renowed for their "total football"
nowadays the Dutch approach will be known as "by any means "
(also remember netherlands portugal 2006, same kung-fu style)

but now a question pops up

what the north-americans call soccer is known to the rest of the world as football
but in the game that the north-americans call football , the ball is most of the time touched by hands :-) so why is that being called football??

We also drive on the parkway and park in the driveway? ;)

We call football soccer because we already have a football game. :grin2:

RE: Soccer World Cup - Remko van den Berg - 12-14-2010

According to the spanish newspaper "el mundo" the spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, who is now in jail cause of providing doping to professional cyclists,
said that to his fellow prisoner that if he would talk "we (spain) wouldn't be european champion nor worldchampion"

wonder how much of this is true but if it is then we have to find another sport to watch (i prefer NHL)

RE: Soccer World Cup - Dog Soldier - 12-14-2010

That could be very sad indeed if true for the sport.

On the other hand, playing the championship in Quatar may do more damage in the long run. Hard to say at this point. It will take more than doping to tolerate the heat.
