Looking to perhaps get a few, just for a hobby or ornaments, a small project of sorts.
So what size would be best,15mm 27mm ????.
And what in your opinion is the best maker of these for quality.
I don't know what size they are, but, the smaller ones constitutes being able to field larger armies if you want to.
I have been looking at Perry miniatures, they look good, I guess it's got a lot to do with how good a job of painting I can do.
Also, ACW and Napoleonics seem to be the best eras. After that, it might be interesting to look at the Romans or Greeks.

Scale selection depends on your purpose. If you're gaming with them, I'd recommend 15mm so you could field a larger army. If you're painting for modelling or display, I'd go with a larger scale, as they would show more detail.
I haven't made any purchases of figures in quite a few years, so am "out of the loop" as far as recommending a manufacturer.
I have been watching loads of videos on painting and I have been amazed at what can be done.
Now I have been to a hobby shop bot could not find any thing from the era in which I am interested. Living in the far north of Scotland makes it slim pickings for such things.
Going to keep looking, I can get painting materials but the troops I can't find. I will get a kit of some description just to get me started.
I don't do miniatures however, if you need "practice", by something cheap so you can practice different things including painting/coloring techniques.
That way if you mess up, no big deal.
Save the "good" miniatures for "when it really counts"!
Can't wait to see what you come up with.

I should have given my opinion earlier my apologies.
Showing my age here but decades ago I painted thousands of 25mm later 28mm, followed by 15mm and 18mm then 1/300 and 1/2400 miniatures, a very time consuming process but very satisfying pastime, I worked shifts so could paint day and night. but LIGHT is a wonderful tool.
No internet in those days to watch how it should be done !!!. Quite a secretive hobby then.
Paint the figures of the same unit like a production technique, one colour at a time. coat, trousers. boots, packs and flesh etc. Nowadays you can buy jars of WASH which settle in all the folds on the finished figures, essential and wonderful.
28mm is best but very expensive, however if you can achieve a proficient level it becomes a good investment. I got a shock when I sold some early painted figures, games and books on EBAY.

You can always check online. But, sucks you would have to wait for them to arrive, even if it is next day delivery. When I was a kid, I had a bunch of Army men, 1/72 and 1/76 scale from Airfix that I painted. Mostly WW2 and ACW.

I would not recommend plastic figures and never did as the paint easily peels off in large chunks, however I believe there is some thin base coating now available, and a lotta plastic figures ranges are now available.
I'm now out of the loop but remember bumping into one of my former wargames club members who was very enthusiastic on the subject and the many new highly detailed plastic figure ranges available.
So either research on line would recommend You tube or maybe you could have a local wargames club.
