The Started scenario is at night and the indicated visibility range is 3.5nm.

Enhanced Submarine Rules - Reduced night spotting

At night, the maximum spotting distance to see a submarine on the surface is halved.

However, in the scenario the Flower Class Corvette, Penstemon spots the player UBoat on the surface at 3.5nm.

Is this a bug or something I am missing?

As the visibility is displayed in orange it may mean that the UBoat spotting is 3.5nm but this is not the case for the blue side(?).  It is logical from programming but not from reality I suggest!  (Remembering this is pre-radar).

I noticed the same thing - Penstemon spots you almost immediately. I believe she would have been equipped with radar at this stage, though.
Hrms, yeah, I just tested it. There's something up here. We'll get this worked out and patched.
Ok, on more testing, it seems I spoke too fast.

Near as I can tell, it's working fine, but here's a very important question.

Did you inhibit your deck gun from firing?

If not, then your gunflashes are giving away your location, even though you would not normally be visible.

When I tested last night, I forgot to turn off the deck gun. Today, I turned it off, and all worked normally.
In my testing I found it works okay, as long as you Inhibit Firing.

Yeah, we need to update the docs (next patch) but as I said, your gunflashes make you visible under those circumstances.

Let's update the scenario as well, so that the U-boat starts with the gun inhibited.

Actually, I'd rather leave it with the gun firing, and teach the player how (and why) to inhibit fire.

agree!  It is all part of the fun of playing these things.
Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, but I did notice a "problem" with the intro scenario.

It seems to play fine from the U-boat side, a good learning exercise in torpedo fire and maneuver.

But when I played as the escort, in several attempts the U-boat always came at me on the surface, never at periscope depth or submerged. Each time my escorts took out the sub with surface gunnery, and I never got the opportunity to use any ASW.

Thanks,
Mike
