Hi Guys
The idea for my Napoleonic Counters Project (NCP) mod came from the REN II mod I did for the JTS REN game some time ago and the more recent one for their 7 Years War title, that is still being refined.  The idea is to replace the “2DSymbolsLg” and “2DSymbolsSm files” in the “Map folder” with new ones that provide larger clearer 2d counters that use the “Divisional Colours” option in the game to cleanly fill in a portion of the unit type symbol box in a similar fashion to the JTS 20th century operational games such as Panzer battles.

With the exception of “Republican Bayonets on the Rhine”  (where one has not been made yet) all of these mods work best if they are installed on top of Philippe's mod for that JTS Napoleonic title.

There are 6 individual NCP counter sets each of which is designed for use with a specific JTS “Napoleonic Battles” title or titles or in some cases a limited number of scenarios for a particular title or titles. Details of which set is used for what is set out in table form in the Designers notes file included with the mod.

How to install the counter sets
1.    In the “Map” folder of your chosen  JTS Napoleonic title  create 2 sub folders one called “Stock Counter Files” in to which you should drop back up copies of the “2DSymbolsLg” and “2DSymbolsSm” files already in the “Map folder and 1 called “NCP Counter Files” into which you should copy the relevant NCP counter set.
2.    Then to apply the mod simply copy the 2 NCP files in the NCP Counter Files” sub folder into the main “Map” folder, saying yes to overwrite.
3.    When and if you wish to revert to the original counter set simply copy the “2DSymbolsLg” and “2DSymbolsSm” in the “Stock Counter Files” sub folder back into the main “Map” folder of the game and say yes to overwrite.

The future
The planned changes to the “2DSymbolsLg” and “2DSymbolsSm” files being worked on by “Wargame Design Studios”  for the JTS Napoleonic Titles will of course render this mod obsolete but when these come out I will make a replacement mod using the new larger file structure.

From my point of view this move is a very welcome development not least because we will now have different counters for different classes of the 3 main combat arms such as Horse Artillery and Heavy Cavalry.

Moving “Divisional Colours” from the centre of the counter to the left side in the style of the JTS ACW counters will also mean that the 2nd colour of a nation’s unit counters will remain visible even when “Divisional Colours” is turned on which (as can be seen above) is not the case at present.

And now for some screenshots

Screenshot 1 taken from a Russo Swedish War Scenario in the “Campaign Bautzen”, game with the “Divisional Colours” option turned on. Note artillery units with a red dot in the centre of the cannonball symbol are unlimbered and ready to fire (where it is entirely black they are limbered up for moving) while infantry units with a thick X symbol are in line formation while those with a thin X are still in column.

Screenshot 2 Taken from Republican Bayonets on the Rhine  with the “Divisional Colours” option turned off Prussians on the Left and French on the right. Note the Prussian skirmisher advancing up the road towards the French in the centre of the map. Artillery, leaders (as indicated by a gold star) and infantry skirmisher units leave the background of the unit symbol box entirely clear (apart from the unit type symbol itself) so as to allow either the national unit symbol box colour (as here) or the divisional colour (when turned on as in screenshot 1 above) to show through while cavalry and formed infantry have 1 or 2 of the 2 or 4 triangles left between the / or X filled in in white.

Screenshot 3 Taken from “Bonaparte's Peninsular War” again without Divisional Colours with images set in Windows to be `175% larger than normal, (I use this a lot to get a larger zoom level for HPS/JTS games) showing French line infantry, light infantry and supply units. This shows the gold and black directional markers placed at the edge of the unit symbol box to show the direction the unit was facing in, note light infantry, supply units, leaders and infantry in square do not have these.

Screenshot 4 line up of the allied army on the Waterloo ridge from “Waterloo 1815” with Divisional colours turned on,  note the 3 units in the centre that have formed square as indicated by the black and yellow box around the unit symbol box and the absence of the black  and gold directional markers referred to above.

Screenshot 5 taken from NCP counter set 2 showing the Piedmont/Sardinia army at St Michele-La Bicocca form “Campaign Marengo” with  “Divisional Colours” turned off and  again with windows set to show everything 175% normal size.. Note also the bottom left corner and top right corner flags on the counters (one will always be viable even if the other is banked out by the gold and black directional marker)  and the Objective marker based on a Piedmont infantry flag.
