On 7 March 1945, the Allied troops were on the Rhine. The plan, the 21st Army Group Field Marshal Montgomery and the 1st US. Army General Simpson was to cross the Rhine at Neuss and Wesel to then encase the Ruhr area. The Ruhr area was the most important industrial area in the German Reich, so it was important for the Allied troops to cut off this industry from the German Reich. The Allies now flew even more Lufftangriffe on the Ruhr, so as to put the industrial production of the Germans completely paralyzed.
