Hey gents just need a little help on understanding something.  I am playing scenario "The First Battle Of Castiglione".   I am trying to take the Chateau objective for 50pts.  I have been hitting it with my battery of 7 8lbers and storming the place with the 5th,6th and 7th Converged Grenadiers...roughly 800 men.  They are fresh with fatigue of 6.  With shooting and assaulting the Chateau I have reduced the two skirmish units holding the Chateau are under 200 men in strength(180 men)  One of them is Routed and the other is Disordered.  I send in 400 Grenadiers and I lose 32 men the defenders lose 0????  I try this multiple times with the best result being my Grenadiers lose 12 and the defender 2.  I know have the defenders both routed and still cannot take the Chateau.

My question is am I doing something wrong?  Can those places not fall?  Do I need to completely surround it and not just block the entry point?

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is what you looking for

pag 31 user manual
When the defending units are in a Chateau hex, the attacking strength is
reduced by 50%.
pag 33 user manual
Special Skirmisher Resolution
When Skirmishers are defending in melee against non-Skirmisher attackers,
they take losses which are 1/5 of the normal value, but always retreat( units inside chateau never retreat). If their
attackers also consist of Skirmishers, then the attackers take 1/5 normal
losses, but the retreat resolution is calculated normally. These special
Skirmisher rules only apply when there is no more than 1/8 of the maximum
stacking limit in the defending hex, or respectively in the total number of
attackers.

So the skirms inside a chateau are very very pesty or atleast till they are no more than 250
The only way to kill them is with enough patience:
Encircle the the chateau ,deploy you inf in line and stack them with gun at range 0, shoot, shoot and then shoot again till they are all dead.
There is no other way to take a chateau hex.
Thanks for the fast response. I will keep at them. They are irritating me so they must be doing there job.

Yes, skirmishers in chateaux are a nuisance. You have to ask yourself, are the objective points worth the losses and fatigue?
Routed skirmishers still dishing out losses to me just doesn't seem right. I get the idea but damn they are stubborn.
(04-24-2017, 08:45 AM)you have to encircle the Chateau soo the routed AND isolated units have only 1 str ....Bloody Bill Wrote: [ -> ]Routed skirmishers still dishing out losses to me just doesn't seem right.  I get the idea but damn they are stubborn.
once both units are routed and isolated you should be able to overrun them...
Thanks for all the help guys. I took the Chateau in 12 turns. I killed or captured the 250 defenders to a loss of 183 of my own, 63 being Grenadiers. Once isolated they really started to not deal out any damage to me. Again thanks gents for the help. I am loving this game.

Cheers,

You are welcome

is good to hear a new player.....btw are you playing against the AI?

you need a real challenge with a PBEM cause the AI is very very poor
@ antoarc65, Yes against the AI. I have not had the game for very long and have only played the AI. Fighting a person sounds challenging fun.
