Hi there,

I am rather new to the John Tiller series and after some playing againgst the AI I believe I have a somewhat firm grasp on the major game mechanics.
One thing I don't quite get though is opportunity fire.
During my turn opportunity fire works just as you would expect. When my troops move adjacent to an enemy unit, often they get fired upon. Same is true when my troops fire at the enemy, often they recieve return fire.
However, during the AI turn, it appears as if my troops never fire at approaching enemy (AI) units. I don't think I have seen opportunity fire in such an instance even once. They do return fire when fired upon, but never at approaching units, which puts me at an disadvantage I'd say.
Is this intentional to give a boost to the rather poor AI or is there something I have to do to allow return fire?

Maybe a game specific problem, what game are you playing?
I have noted it primarily with East Prussia '14, but I have also noted it with the Mius '43 Demo and the mobile PzC games I think.
And it's the Russians who lack opportunity fire?

No, in fact I believe I have exclusively played as the Germans in either game so far.
So I assume this is not usual/expectable behaviour?
I suppose it could be possible that I am affected by some sort of confirmation bias ("the opportunity fire is always more effective on the other side", but somehow I doubt that.
I have the "feeling" that the opportunity fire is affected by the state the unit is in, so high fatigue, low ammo, disrupted, etc. makes a unit less likely to do opportunity fire. But as said it's just a feeling because the manual doesn't mention anything in that direction.
And besides that, it's typical to feel that opportunity fire never comes when you really need it, luck is a bitch and what a bitch she is.
Strange, very strange, i find.
I can repeat this indefinately probably: Start up the Mius 43 Demo as Germans and watch the first Russian turn. They move 3-4 batallions per (mined) hex adjacent to a German unit (in bunkers or trenches) and not a single one fires on the approaching Russians. They only return fire when fired upon.
Could it be that most people simply never play vs the AI?

Maybe, once I learned the engine I went for a human opponent. There is just nothing that tops this, especially when it opens the opportunity to use house rules or agree how to solve problems if any come up in a scenario. Nothing that the AI is capable of doing.
