What do hits caused by counter battery fire do? I like to leave one battery of guns just on that task. Is it a waste?
Can they eventually take out the off board units?
Yes, they can eventually take out enemy off-board arty.

You need to leave the unit un-targeted. The skill of your arty unit, and also your FOO unit is the main factor when deciding how much damage you can do.

Your arty must have longer range than the enemy arty. This is most important.

If you use the replay function, to watch the enemy's turn and also your own arty landing, you should see a message if there has been any effective counter battery arty by your arty units.

Whether it is a waste is up to you to decide but it definitely works.
Thanks. It seemed like the enemy artillery was getting a little weaker but I thought it might just be my imagination. I had seen hits being scored but didn't know how that affected the unit.
It will tell you at the bottom of the replay 'counter battery fire, enemy artillery takes xxx hits', if you don't see that then you are not CB. Also watch your ammo load, if it isn't going down then the boys are brewing tea.
I finally got a Battery Destroyed message!

An off board artillery unit usually has multiple guns in it. Do you know if the Battery Destroyed means the whole unit is gone or just some of the guns in it?
I would assume it means that you have destroyed the battery.
Generally you see a damage report "x casualties due to counter battery fire" or something like that. To see 'battery destroyed'...you must have managed to kill a whole unit.

Have a look at the info on your guns to see if anyone has a kill.

Well played.
Yes one of my off board units has a kill so I assume I eliminated an entire unit and not just one or two guns from the unit.

Took a while but it sure helped the grunts!
Well Played!
Arty control is crucial in SP. Guessing where an opponent will be on the map, knowing where and when to fire, when to wait, how to conserve ammo etc.
Crucial.
I pretty much suck at calling it in on board, it usually arrives in the wrong place at the wrong time.
