Full Version: Modem support?

[echoing a post at the Matrix Forum:]

For the Campaign Series, many players do asynchronous PBEM (obviously).

However, does anybody use any of these real-time Multi-Player modes?
  • Internet
  • Modem
  • Serial (Null Modem)

We have no intention to yank Internet mode.

But especially modem play:
  • Does anybody still play the Campaign Series this way?
  • Does anybody even have a functioning modem? In actual use?

Note: The question is not whether you have a telephone modem and use it to connect to the Internet. The question is rather: Do you hook up with another person to play the Campaign Series using a real-time, synchronous (telephone) modem connection?

Another (rhetorical) question:
  • If the CS devs don't even have modems (I haven't owned or used a modem since the last century), how can we support and maintain this mode of game play?

Just looking to remove some possible outmoded cruft here.
Hi Berto,

I have never used Modem for CS play. I strictly use PBEM across the net and once or twice I used face to face H2H on my machine for play.

I don't have a modem or null modem. After discovering Hi Speed Internet, I just never went back.

Thanks

Ditto again....
I once paid $800 for a state-of-the-art 9600 baud modem. Smile

Haven't used one in years. Thankfully.

My favorite way to play CS was real time modem play. The ladder used to have a box you could toggle to indicate that a game result was played "online." Those win results were considered more prestigous when "the replaying of turns" was more of a concern. Nothing like the thrill of executing your game plan with your opponent using the chat box to provide his "observations."

Now it seems as though online play has been deemphasized. With free time being an issue, synchronizing gaming time with a foe is more difficult. Also, with the evoluation of the CS game engine (disclosure of how many times your opponent saved his turn) that seems to have become a thing of the past as well.

I also enjoy playing H2H via Internet (IP Address).
It's not a concern for me.
Hey Robert: Smoke7

I've never played CS in real-time using a modem and have not owned or used a modem in years.

I'm fine with dropping this supported mode from CS.
