Full Version: N44 upgrade and Volcanoman art problem

I have been out of wargaming for quite awhile but due to some recent changes and further study got interested in playing N44 again. I am now on Windows 8. I re-installed the game, downloaded the N44_113 patch and installed it. When I check the "about" game under the help tab, it still shows the version of the game as N44 1.0, 2000. In the past I thought this updated with the patch. Then I tried to install the Volcano man art I so enjoyed when I was playing previously and a few files unzipped OK but then I got this message:
"Cannot overwrite C:\HPS Simulations\Normandy'44\American' - you do not have the correct permissions"

Any help with these items would be appreciated.

The biggest issue to me is that when I try to play in 3D zoom in mode the graphics are "toy soldiers" rather than Nato symbols. I find this difficult and would love to use the Nato symbols and use Volcanoman's art.

Thanks,

Mike Bush
Hi Mike,

I don't have any ideas on VM's art mod, but if anything comes to mind I will post it.

For the patch, my guess is that you installed the game into C:\HPS Simulations\. However, from what I have seen with the patches over the years, it is updating to C:\Program Files (x86) or something like that and so the actual game doesn't get updated. When you run the patch you can tell it where the game is so change it to match the actual location and all should be good.

You may also have to go in and overwrite the folder properties from read only to where you can modify them. Not sure how Windows 8 works but I think I had to do that with some of my Windows 7 folders.
I tried both of these, manually unchecked the "read only" property for each folder in the game folder including the main N44 folder and then manually identified the folder to unzip the upgrade into, still says n44 version 1.0, 2000.

Drats!

Are you running the update as administrator? If it's a permission issue, that's the only thing that comes to mind.
For counters with 3D graphics look in the top drop down menu under " settings " tick 3D counters.

Still running windows 7 but it looks like a admin error.
It should ask if you want to run the file as the administrator, tick yes.
I know it's a drag but have you tried to unzip the patch into a temp folder, then open up the game in a other window and drag and drop the files into the correct folders.
I had forgotten that some of my games are no read-only and wouldn't update. For those, I had to turn off Read-Only for the game .exe, not just the folders (I don't think the folders were even ready-only?). So if you right click on the link to start up the game and then Open file location, it will take you to the game exe. Open its properties and check for read-only on it - that caused me problems, but I also got an error on trying to patch I thought, so that may not be it. If you can't get it updated, try contacting HPS support.

In addition, try creating a new folder on your desktop, then extract the .zip file to it. Once complete, you should see some files and all sorts of folders in it. Select all the contents of that folder, and cut and paste them into your N44 game folder and say yes to overwrite. It should allow you to do it that way. If not, then yes, it means you have to right click on the folder and then change the properties of it so that it is no longer read-only. As already mentioned too, you should make sure you are setup to be administrator as well, because Windows limits what you can do otherwise.

Alternatively, you can do what I suggest above, but instead of cutting and pasting the contents of that new folder, go to the sub folder that is giving you the problem (American) and inside that folder cut the contents and paste it into the exact same sub folder in your game's folder. Doing either one of those should fix the problem. ;)
Not to jack this thread but I have what sounds to be a similar problem.

Bulge 44. Have not playe din a long time and never on my current PC. Windows 7. Did a fresh install to my PC. Screwed up and tried to install VM mods before seeing there is a patch at HPS to install first. So, I uninstalled and did a 2nd fresh install, DL'd and installed the patch, then tried to test and see if it was OK so far, funny I still saw the alt scenarios in there even when I uninstalled. Do I need to go in manually and wipe stuff out? Then tried to install VM mods and I tested but I am seeing some scenarios say unable to read scenario file and only 1 hex comes up with the first look at the map. Plus the normal text window to read the blurb about the scenario for some of the alt scenarios is all numbers. Please help me Obi Wan. You're our only hope.
The single hex screen with nothing loading is a patch version mismatch. Make sure you have the latest patch for N44 and not an earlier one.

I am not sure from your post, but it is important in WIN7 to not allow the initial install to go to the windows/programs directory. Better to direct the install to C:\HPS Simulations\N44 or something like that.

The alt scenarios are custom, so they would not necessarily be considered by the uninstall program to be removed. You should not be worried to have to remove them manually.
