This has always been somewhat confusing too me. What rules do most of you play with when playing 1776. I have tried them all but not sure which is best when playing PBEM.
C'mon, is everybody unable to respond. Maybe this is the wrong place to ask this question.
Normally I like to use the following optional rules.
- Victory Points for Leader Casualties
- Quality Melee Modifiers
- Isolation Rules
- Automated Defensive Fire
- Flank Morale Modifier
I don't ever remember using Cornwallis Cannon however, only certain scenarios suggest you use it (Found in the scenario description).
As for Rifle Fire Effects, there are some scenarios where it is suggested in the scenario description, when to use this rule. An example of this can be found in the 1st round of the 1776 Tournament we had.

Finally, Line Movement Disruption I have used before however, since the units in the EAW series rout so easily even without this optional rule in effect, I have been starting to stay away from it.
Thank you for your reply, sorts things out for me.
If you will permit one so new as to venture an opinion - - - -
I, too, have begun to prefer Line Movement Disruption as off. Lots of discussion of this over at the CCC, but if the incidence of Disruption were not so great, it would be a better option. I heartily approve of the recent (ish) update which increased movement cost for units in line. To my thinking, this is a better way to restrict the movement of units in line than the disruption.
I have a hard time imagining a British regiment of 8 companies advancing toward rebels in the open, but then 2 companies refuse to close with the bayonet. Maybe I have been reading Sharpe too much!
Greetings from a rookie,
What optional rules are appropriate for a 1812 game (AI)?
Thanks.
