Full Version: I feel ashamed...

Below is an excerpt from a post I made over at Gamesquad on a post about Tigers Unleashed.

I've owned WinSPWW2 since it came out but never really got around to playing it. The Steel panthers series was one I somehow overlooked all those years ago. At 1440x900 it looks OK (alot better than Tigers Unleashed anyway) in fact once I started getting immersed the graphics grew on me, I didn't like the infantry but even those I've warmed too. I started a long campaign as Germany starting in '39. Once i got to choose my forces I was amazed and enthralled at the choices in the game (It has Gary Grigsby written all over it) the detail is amazing. I'm still on the first attack against Poland and time flew by which doesn't happen often these days when it comes to gaming. In this one sitting WinSPWW2 has become my no 1 tactical turn based wargame. Why on earth someone doesn't come along and give it a facelift, make it wego, add a similar mechanic as Tigers has with regards to sending different soldiers to different floors etc...there are loads of tweaks and features you could add but use the current game as a foundation.

Mr Grigsby should forget about Grand Strategy and Operational and get back to doing a tactical game...

Oh and considering tactical scale wargames are my favourite I feel ashamed I never gave this much time previously...
Heh, welcome to the fold. WinSPWW2 is the best squad level turn based war game that there is. You think that campaign is fun...give PBEM a try. PBEM with WinSPWW2 is a gem, from troop purchase to the last turn (purchasing forces is one of my favorite parts).

As for Grigsby or 2x3 going back to tactical games....I emailed Joel a year or so a ago and here is an excerpt:

"There aren't any plans to do a new tactical game anytime soon. We'd love to do it, and maybe down the road we'll do it again, but not for awhile, sorry."

They have plans to expand out using the WitE engine...that can keep them busy for many years...
Oh well what a shame but I knew WitE and it's engine was going to be there main wargame preoccupation.

I knew someone would recommend PBEM. As with SB I'm sure the game truly shines playing this way and I played SB PBEM and could never go back to playing the AI, which sort of backfired as I don't like being committed to playing a game (must have commitment issues) so I'd never go PBEM again as I don't want to let anyone down and I don't want to resent having to play the game when I'm not in the mood. So now I never play SB! I don't want that to be the case with WinSPWW2 so the AI it will be.

Several years ago, I tried to get into WinSPWW2 however, I had a very hard time picking out units in the trees and forest. It was just too much on my eyes, so I gave up.

Checkmate, it is very tough on the eyes I admit. I'd love to be able to mod the graphics, however I don't think you can do what I'd have planned. Especially at higher res. Some ground textures and terrain is worse than others. The game needs some slight blurring effect to stop it looking so pixelised (similar to what I did to Tigers Unleashed) and this would help loads. Anyway I have got used to it.

Have you used the ID tags?

They are cumbersome and distracting i know, but you can turn them off easily once getting your spidey sense;)
Yep, the old infantry were tough on the eyes...especially if they are in the trees. Two mods I use are the larger infantry mod:

Which are much easier to see. I use this in combination with a small unit flag mod that was done by someone else (Cross?).

As for PBEM, I too often dislike having to commit to daily or even multiple turns a week. I have a more than full time job, A wife and three little girls! When I setup a PBEM especially WinSPWW2 I warn my potential opponent that my turn around is generally a turn a week...sometimes more, sometimes less. So far that has never been a problem. For SB which is quicker playing for me I can generally get out 1-3 turns a week, and so far nobody has complained.
I have not the best view but I'm used to graphics. They are much more clear than on SPWaW in my opinion.
So do not play SPWaW
My eyes are failing me also, but can easily see whats trying to do me harm, even without ID tags,it's called having battlefeild awareness,,, Scouts when stealthy and not making themselves visable like firing or getting too close are perfect for spotting;)
