Hi there.

If I have a motorized subunit - a battalion or a company on most occassions - I saw that apart from changing the movement mode there is also an opportunity to make them go on foot in the menu. I am assuming that that basically means the motorized troops get offloaded and enter combat or patrol on foot - so how do I get them back onto their vehicles apart from changing their travel mode as even then their information box retains the "on foot" status? Am I getting anything wrong here? ...
Stack them with their parent HQ and end the turn. next turn they will have their vehicles back.
......and i has to be the units immediate HQ rather than just any one from that formation.

Allright then, I'll surely try. Thanks guys.

Just to add to this - always take a look at the location of a unit's immediate HQ before you make a final decision to dismount that unit, unless, of course, you don't have a problem with leaving that unit on foot for a long time, or even the remainder of the game.
Just to add some insight where this rule first came into place. It was Bulge where the Germans dismounted a PzG unit and out it across the Our River on rubber rafts to hold the bridgehead. After the Bridge is built, the HQ can cross and the units get there HT back as they need them to complete their historical task which they couldn't do ON FOOT.
