As a way of "better" connecting with Blitz comrades... I thought it would make an interesting thread to find out what significant activities players are involved with (other than PBeM CS!) over these hot summer months! :eek1:

For me, it was serving on a mission team (Dulac, Louisiana) to help a young mother with three small children by rebuilding two bedrooms and a bathroom in her house!

It was hard work and long hours... but in the end we were able to impact a family in a positive way! Big Grin

Next? :chin:

Thanks to the economy, there's no one left at my company who does what I do, so weekends have become my vacations, except for when I have to work, lol. But I'm grateful we're still getting jobs and I have an income. Living on a lake and owning a pontoon boat makes up for the time away from the office, so not all bad.

Wish I could say I'm doing good thing for people less fortunate than me, like you're doing Mike, but maybe next year. For now charity has to start at home.

Dave
Yes, me too Dave.
I can't hold a candle to Mike's volunteerism.
My wife lost her job in February and did not get a new job until July. Money got a bit tight.

In spite of that we do have some things that are out of the normal.
We care for my sister, for half the week. She had serious back surgery and requires a year to two years for recovery.
We took in a young person who had "family issues" and offered her the safety of our home. Got her a job and she is going back to school in the fall.
We also are active in the rescue of Scottish Terriers. At the moment we adopt older ones who are in foster homes. When I retire we are going to become a foster family.

cheers

Ed

My wife and I have two young sons (2.5 years and 11 months), so we spend most of our non-working time looking after them and keeping the house and yard going.

Mike
Hmmmm...

This summer I've been handling some minor legal matters for various friends and acquaintances while looking for a full-time position, and taking care of my daughter (she is now three, as of the 6th) who some of you may recall was born early (at 27 weeks and 1 day, after 4 weeks with no amniotic fluid). She still has a weakened immune system and so cannot go to play school safely and I've been taking care of her along with her "nanny." We went to the mountains in New Mexico where my family has a cabin at 8800 feet - wonderful. If I could, I'd live there I think.

I've also been doing things around the house (repairing cracks and holes, doing some painting, installing a reverse osmosis system with a connection to the ice maker too, installing fans, repairing an heirloom rocking chair,etc...) and working on our cars. In particular, my GTO appears to have a bad engine control computer that will have to be replaced and then the entire care retuned. Money and time I can ill afford at the moment.

Ive also been writing on several book projects, some I've been working on on-and-off for several years, others that are new. Also working on a legal web site in the event I decide I have to try and go full time as a solo practitioner (not my first choice in the Houston economy and lawyer saturation level). Oh, also trying to get my health issues under control too. Unfortunately, I cannot report at this time any such good works and volunteer efforts as the others here - and respect them all the more for their being able to work that into their lives.

Also, we are now expecting another baby. Should be in March I believe. LOL, now I REALLY need a full time job.

Hi Dave I think I know what you mean. But just to clarify- your living on the pontoon boat? on the lake. Or you have a pontoon boat? Either way nice!!!

I've been spending time completing home repairs on a repo in Las Vegas. Me and the wife go there some weekends. Most of the work has been done so now we play more than work. The plan is to retire there. In the meantime I have been renting it out to weekend travelers to LV.

I don't know about the rest of you but at 58 I'm ready for retirement. The only draw back is finaces don't permit it. So its working but almost tasting the (supposed good life). Kind of like being a prisoner
My business is at its busiest over the summer months, from March to November I'm rushed off my feet trying to make enough money to get us over the long slow winter without much time for anything else. What little free time I do get goes to writing articles for my websites or replies on the forums I help run and playing the odd game turn.

Good on you Mike for what you do, the world needs more that give as you do unfortunately I'm not in the position to do so at the moment. I do give but only money not time as that is all I can afford hopefully If I get a chance to retire I may be able to do more.cheers

Many thanks for all who have posted to my thread! cheers

It's made for some interesting reading! :)

I think sometimes we tend to "forget" that Blitz players have lifes outside of PBeM and it is a good thing to be reminded of that fact occasionally.

Hi Phil! House on the lake, pontoon boat at the dock. Suddenly not much time for either. Another crummy 14 hour day. Still, counting my blessings.
