I am amazed i had never heard of this mission, but in general events in the Pacific don't get the same coverage as events in Europe, if this mission had happened over Germany i am sure i would have read about it?

Double checked on the net, it said there were "only" 17 Jap fighters involved (rather than 19), either way an amazing story!
