26 April 1941, ARGOS, GREECE

The outcome in Greece was not in doubt. The Greek Army, under Alexander Papagos had surrendered the day before. Australian, New Zealander and British (ANZAC) 'W' Force was now withdrawing to evacuate from the south coast of Greece. The German 12.Army was converging on the southern ports from the east and west of Athens, to entrap the Allies. The last remaining ports for evacuation were the small coastal ports of the Peloponnesus. The narrow isthmus at Corinth with one bridge spanning the Corinth Canal was the escape corridor for the entire Allied 'W' Force. The commander, Brigadier General E.A. Lee, had orders to secure the bridge with all available units; remnants of Australians, British, Greek and New Zealanders scattered around the north and south approaches to the bridge.
