Hi - I'm brand new to Squad Battles, and just got Red Victory. Great, great game so far.

I am still playing boot camp #1, assault the ridge, and just cannot hit anything. I fire and fire and fire, but I rarely see any effect. I hardly ever even see the hit icon on my target with a zero in it. It looks like my fire is completely ineffective.

Yet, the enemy AI fires and ALWAYS either gets a hit icon, often with 1 or 2 damage on me. But, the AI always gets at least the hit icon with a zero. I don't even get that except a couple times during the whole scenario.

Is this just how it is when attacking fortified positions? I have yet to play any other scenario because I wanted to at least get a minor victory on this one. Yes, I've read the other thread about this mission, and have been trying those tactics. And, yes I've read the Grunt School article.

My concern is more just the fact that I can't hit the broad side of a barn, even when I'm 1-4 hexes away from the enemy.

I at least want to beat a couple boot camp scenarios before diving into PBEM.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff your not doing anything wrong just because you fire doesnt mean your going to hit anybody because if that happened wars would be over on the 1st shots from now on check and see when firing if you get disruptions or pins. so dont get frustrated it happens to all of us

Thanks for the response. The only time I've gotten a pin or disruption is when I have two or three squads surrounding the enemy hex, and I fire into the hex or throw my satchel charges. Then I finally get a hit or a pin.

Obviously I don't expect to hit all the time. I have played this scenario four times, and the most enemy losses I have been able to inflict is 12, and that is mostly from assaulting the hex in close combat.

What does it mean when you don't even get a red hit indicator in the target hex when you fire? Is that a complete whiff? What is the difference in not getting a hit indicator at all, and getting a hit indicator with '0' in it?

You will only get the hit indicator if the unit you are targeting is in a clear hex, or some other terrain where you can 'see' the results of your fire. If they are in a village or forest hex, you can't necessarily see the results, and you won't get a hit indicator, even if you did cause casualties with your fire. Most shots don't cause casualties, you cause the greatest casualties (to yourself as well ;) in assaults, but the effects of fire are cumulative, so you want to keep it up in order to disrupt or pin the enemy unit before you assault.

A textbook assault goes like this: The enemy unit is sitting on a 50 point objective in a improved forest hex. You are dropping 82mm mortars shells on him, and your MMG is also firing at him. You don't see any results fromthis fire, but keep it up anyway since you are lowering the enemy units effectiveness and morale with each shot, which moves them closer to being pinned or disrupted. You move up your platoon of sappers, and toss your satchel charges at him. This is a good way to pin the unit, and will usually cause some casualties. You pin the unit, and assault with 2 squads. The enemy unit takes a lot of casualties, runs, and you win the game. It's easy in theory anyway... :)

Good luck, and welcome to the Blitz!
