Okay, so the computer is on the fritz again. Tore it apart and it appears that the HD is failing. This will be the 4th HD HP has provided for this POS. I've told them to either buy higher quality or fix the rest of the hardware on this system because it's suiciding these drives. Having worked for HP I'm embarrassed and enraged. I have considered smashing the thing to bits by dropping it off the 140 foot high I-10/Beltway 8 interchange and then driving to Palo Alto and punching HP's CEO in the nose.

When I was there, and at Compaq pre-merger, we would never have allowed something like this to happen without major efforts to remedy the customers problem. God, how I lament the offshoring of all these American tech and manufacturing jobs. Our quality scores were much higher from US suppliers, but the analyses that it was marginally cheaper to accept poor quality devices and just replace them when they went bad won the day. I guess I'm out of date because my allegiance is not to the dollar.

Oh, I'm not really going to go punch Mark Hurd in the nose, regardless of how gratifying that might be (and my office was right down the way from his). I might, however, buy a new machine and then mail this junk heep to his home address.

When i get back up and running Ill forward turns to you guys.

LR
I hear you...

Then again, never has the buck bought such amount of computing power for such a little price that these things cost nowadays? So pack more of gizmos into everything?

Have you tried to find a normal, regular reliable plain old cell phone lately? Can't be found. Want a basic computer? Build it yourself. Quantity and marketing over quality everywhere?

On a separate note, I just ordered and received a replacement battery from Hong Kong for my old iPod. Cost: some six bucks - including shipping and handling! Now how do you compete with that as a local business???

No worries - hope you get your trusty ol HP up and running soon...
We're 1 for 3 with HPs at my office. The one that failed seemed like a harddrive failure, but we ended up taking it out and putting it in an external USB box. Nothing wrong with it. 4 harddrive failures out of the same box has got to mean something internally is frying them I would think. That's just too many. In our case we chucked the HP in the dumpster after removing the RAM and a couple of cards we'll probably never use. They're so cheap nowadays it just doesn't seem worth it to try fixing them. Plus I always wonder if they'll just break again since the repair just meant swapping out a drive, rather than finding a leaky capacitor on the mother board or a surging power supply.

Regardless, I feel your pain.

Dave
Hang in there brudda.
You might wat to try a Solid State CPU, more money but much better and no defraging.

Joe
"Disk." He said: "disk". cheers
Larry: :smoke:

Daryl Worley has a great country song that came to my mind as I read this thread... and another one you posted about "exploding" canning jars...

"Sounds like Life to Me"

Here's the chorus...

Sounds like life to me it ain’t no fantasy
It’s just a common case of everyday reality
Man I know it’s tough but you gotta suck it up
To hear you talk you’re caught up in some tragedy
It sounds like life to me

I guess, in the end, we need to count our individual blessings... and move on. Just like your PC problems... that too will pass.
I had CPUs on the brain and ment Solid State HD. I recently had to return 2 gaming puters back to Dell because both had the wrong CPU.

Cheers

Joe
