The newly formed Pz. Bgde 112 was rushed to France in late August, 1944.The Bgde. consisted of a few Eastern Front veterans, notably the commander, von Versloot, combined with new recruits. Versloot was eager to achieve the next level of his Iron Cross. On paper, the Bgde. was a formidable force, however it was devoid of essential support elements. The Pz. Bgde. moved into positions at Dompaire and were content to await further orders. Versloot enjoyed his cognac.........
The Free French Forces in the area, of the 2nd Armored Division, were not content to play a waiting game. They formed three battle groups to attack the Germans, as well as being veterans of three campaigns......
