Full Version: Computer - internet issues - sorry for the delays

Hi everyone;

to those who have a game with me, here's quick heads up as to what's going on.

On Nov. 1st, my modem burned out causing me to lose my internet connection. This was after 5 week of very spotty service. I must upgrade my comp for big $$$ to make it compatible for future internet use. Lacking these funds, I did the next best thing;

I used my dear ol' mom's computer for everything, including gaming. My parents live on the other side of town (Louisville, Kentucky is a *big* city).

Then, about the 22nd of Nov., my *mom's* computer developed a serious software problem (hey, don't look at me) and it cost nearly $500 and a week of geek-squad wrangling to correct. I'm still testing some things out on it, but it looks like things are more-or less ok. Today is the first time in NINE days I've been online. I'm posting this from my mom's house.

With both her computer and mine down, there was no real option for me to send or receive turns (or e-mail), and my dad won't let me anywhere near his business computer. My brother is in Mexico on vacation (figures), so I can't use his machine.

This little issue is both inconvenient and embarrassing at the same time - I'm not used to being dependent on someone as an adult. On top of that, I'm in two tourneys, two team games, and two independent scenarios with folks.

Long story short is, things look like they are back up and running, and I will be cranking out turns by tomorrow. Better yet, I found the funds to get my personal computer fixed - that's about a week away.

Also, I'm considering making my gmail address my main one - I'll give it a day or two of testing to see if my e-mail client is ok.

Again, my apologies for the turn delays - you guys have been more than patient. At least I'm (very) aware of the problem and things are in the process of being corrected.

Perhaps ten days from now all this will just be a bad dream...

Nils, Steffen, Pat; I've received your e-mails and I'm working to get the turns out.

Talk to you guys soon. I hope.
no probs John wondered what had happened to you as your turns were normally quick.
Jeez John PLEASE tell me that wasn't a dial-up modem that burned out.
Hi John

Good to hear from you. Sometimes bad things happen. As I told you in my last mail I will just wait.

Good luck

Boris
Thanx for the responses guys; good news! I managed to "acquire" the funds to get my computer updated. Once it has been done, I can have AT&T just turn my internet back on (I already have an updated modem - just couldn't use it as I have no ethernet card/ethernet port - only a USB pci card port, which is not compatible with the newfangled stuff).

I'm looking at about 3 to 4 days to get the comp out of the shop.

And no David, lol, it was an Alcatel USB speedtouch modem that burned out - I had dsl. My download speed was about 600kb per sec.

Since I can move data from my machine to here via my cd burner, I'm going to start up my new tournament scens and send them on very - soon - will take about 2 days. When my comp is fixed, I should be ready to continue on from there. This computer has some serious registry issues it turns out, that prevents it from running JTCS (and some other things) properly, for example the sound doesn't even work now.

When I tell my folks that this thing needs to work correctly (esp. after $500+ worth of recent work), they just say it works "good enough." Sigh. Very frustrating indeed - but at least I have a plan and timeline for fixing MY machine.

I'll be in touch.
Good news and good luck John.

Pat
Good news for all my opponents (or bad, depending on whether you're losing or not :chin: ).

The CD burner and associated software on my mom's machine here seems to be functional. It copied the game files and other stuff to the blank CD without a problem. I can see them on the (formerly) blank CD and everything looks good.

since I was already able to move data *from* my place to here, this basically means I can now move files you guys send me BACK to CD, then take them home, play them, burn the updated file to CD, then bring them back here to e-mail.

It's clumsy, but I think it will work. I was given an eta of 4 days to fix the computer, and the cable company says they can hook me up to the 'net on...Dec. 15th.

***I am going to spend the weekend catching up my turns before I have the computer folks pick up my machine***

(which actually works fine; it just has to be updated to be compatible with the new hardware and software that's out there now, especially the new modems).

I am afraid of doing anything that might jinx this arrangement, so wish me luck. :bow:
Good luck, but you can buy pretty decent computers these days for under $500.

Also, can you use your phone to send files?
