How can you tell how far your units will be able to move in travel mode, without actually entering travel mode. Pn numerous occasions I put a arty unit in travel mode, only to find it can't move anyway
In the paramater data (under the Help menu, or just hit F4), somewhere near the bottom is a long list of movement costs, by type (foot, motorized, tracked, horse, etc...)

As well...when a gun goes into travel mode, it costs 1/3rd of its movement (or all if it is big gun). It also costs 1/3rd of its movement to leave travel mode. Since most guns are motorized..you will find that they suffer greatly in terrain for movement.

After your in travel mode, you can use the 'Reachable Hexes' Tool button to light up the hexes you can reach.
Thanks

OK, Looks like i can figure it out, but with a good chance for error.

Wish there was a short cut key with reachable hexes in travel mode

Joseph:

I think you need to let go of some of the control here - when you consider, a commander doesn't really know exactly how far a unit can go - and although he has a good idea, sh!t happens.

Also - I don't think the commandrr makes the decision to limber up arty and move it based on exactly where he thinks it should be at the end of the turn - rather he knows the arty unit is outliving its usefulness at the current location.

I once asked John Tiller to re-compute the MP allowance as soon as a unit moves sometimes giving more MPs and sometimes less, based on unit quality. Its a cool idea but ohn figured that people wouldn't like it because of the lost control and uncertainty. But as anyon in the military will tell you - plans and what should happen doesn't alway match what does happen.

This is the hit you have to take to move large guns or units in difficult terrain, the next move you will have the full movement allowance in T mode and you will be able to move them away from that location.

As Glenn says nothing is certain in war.......;)
