Hi folks; We have been bouncing an idea around in the officer forum so I thought I would bring it forth and ask you guys what your opinion is. A fellow officer was asking about resetting the ladders since all the top guys may not be the best players, but have been here the longest (ahem).

While this won't happen, since it does penalize those who have put the time in, a second option was brought forth which I think has merit. This is to run a competition using the ladder sort feature (now you know how I found out about it).

Basically it would be something like this:

On a given date we start the competition and see who is the #1 guy on the ladder using the ladder sort at the end date. This person would be awarded either a medal or bonus points, not sure which but leaning toward a custom medal.

Example: start date 1 Jan 10, end 31 Dec 10. All games completed between these dates count. The top person is awarded a prize.

I figure this might induce the new guys to play more as I think maybe they feel they will never get on the first page so why bother.

So what is your opinion? Answer these questions:

-Yes or no to the idea
-points or medal
-anything else you wish to add.
I added a poll to help, but please post your ideas/views too.
A year of intense gaming! That sounds like a lot of fun.
ELO is the only thing that matters to me. If the "officers" want to revamp that, cool. Also it should apply to all ladders, despite the number of members *cough* Black Powder.
ELO won't change and the ELO isn't 100% accurate either (ie if you delete a game result the ELO does not revert). The ELO is not a hard core tool, it was only put in place as another overall tool to sort players and helps other find like opponents.
How about at the end the top 4 players do a playoff?
That is more then what I wanted, this was just to be something to spike the newer players interest and so they could be crowned #1 for a bit. What you are suggesting will require myself or Walrus to start to run little tournys every 6 to 12 months, a real pain. And also, that would not really crown #1 on the ladder would it?

By letting the ladder do it we are letting it do the book work; if you see that player 1 is 40 points ahead of you then you will take on another game and figh hard to try and score those points.

Thanks for the feedback though.

..or you can scare up a FNG or a hopeless player like seabolt for some quick and easy points. ;)
I think such a competition won't really say much since the winner will be the one who scored as many "big victories" as possible during the time period. The easiest way of doing that would be to pick on beginners/worse players and avoid playing those on your own level since then you'll very likely to get only minor victories, draws or even lose. And since one overwhelming victory is worth 10 losses.. well you get the point.

Something based on ELO would be better.. even though the ELO isn't perfect either.
And playing a small battle scores the same as playing a large but still the competition probably would bring more action to the ladder.
