Okay guys, I've expanded maps I've created in the past but, if I recall correctly, they have always simply moved the existing map to one side and added blank space on one side. Is there any way to expand the map in all directions, or in a single selected direction?

Yes by both using expand and shift map.

Perhaps by editing the map file in a text editor but I have never tried that. I always resize and then shift. Works fine for me. The best way is to start your map so you'll never have to expand upwards or leftwards (and hence don't ever have to shift). This will cause the hexnumbers to change of the part you already made which you may not want if you're using hex overlays on digital maps or Google Earth.
