Im playing old style SP H2H and the sounds, oh baby the sounds, they are really good, the planes really come screaming in, the tanks screech and rumble and the shooting sounds like shooting.

I like the Cross sounds but some of them are a little strange to me, these ones really sound good and its hard not to get into it when the enemy plane really comes screaming in with roar and then rumbles away for a good 20 seconds after, no quick fade, and the arty is the same, gently rumbling away after it fires, its great stuff.

There's no doubt that WaW handles sounds better than WinSP. This is the one area where I think WinSp is weaker than WaW. WaW has almost 700 sounds (though quite a few are duplicates), compared to 152 for WinSP. Which means WinSP can soon sound a bit repetative.

I think H2H replaces about 150 of the WaW sounds (of which about 80 are unique sounds) .

Some of the Cross Sounds may be a 'little strange' because there are only 152 sounds for an enormous OOB. So most sounds are used for several different weapons/vehicles, which has led to compromises. Artillery is a good example, as some arty sounds are also used for smoke rounds, cannon shots and vehicle explosions.

In the earliest release of Cross Sounds I had a long aircraft sound, which I really liked; but in WinSP, some aircraft (like bombers) use that same sound over and over again - I guess an old original DOS work around to try to use the same sound in two different ways - and the long aircraft sounds horrible when rapidly repeated.

But I encourage you to use the WinSP sound guide to switch out any sounds you like.

I would love WinSP to have an expanded sound map similar to WaW, and I've brought this up over at Shrapnel, but I don't think it's even on the table at the moment.

Meanwhile, it's a reason to still play WaW and H2H.

I never knew that Win SP had so few sounds, the work you did on the Cross mod was great but such a difference in the number explains why.

Thats said the only strange sounds in the cross Mod are certain arty when they hit and it sounds like there is an echo effect after the sound, which is not noticeable when it raining down but is when there is only a few; and one of the tank shells hitting a tank which sounds like someone kicking an oil can, other than that they are great and your work have made WinSp much better.

But how do I change sounds without getting them mixed up? Which ones would you recomend moving across, Im keen to make my WinSp panthers sound like they do in WaW, I love that fearsome rumble.

Artillery Echo

You are probably taking about sound 2.wav which is an explosion sound for mortars and light artillery. It’s also used for smoke shells. I think you are right that it has too much of an echo. I will put on the list to update in the next release of Cross Sounds.


Oil Can Ricochet

There are 3 ricochet sounds in WinSP.
22.wav
81.wav
82.wav

These are much better than the original WinSP ricochets, which were really annoying, but there is still room for improvement. I think you are probably talking about 81.wav

The WaW ricochets are:
456.wav thru 476.wav

WaW sounds are found in the ‘SND’ folder.


Tank Movement

The main tank movement sound in WinSP is 33.wav, but there are three other tank wavs in Cross Sounds which you may have never heard, because they’re possibly only used by obscure OOB:
32.wav
220.wav
249.wav

The tank movement sounds in WaW are:
72.wav
75.wav
78.wav
81.wav

Changing a Sound

1. Identify the sound in the WinSP ‘SOUNDS’ folder that you want to change. You can use the Cross Sounds Sound Guide to help you find the right sound.

Example: You want to change the main tank sound which is 33.wav
Just double click on 33.wav (in the Sounds folder) and your Windows Media Player should play the sound, to confirm it’s the one you want to change.

2. Rename the sound. This is just to save it, in case you want to change back at some point. ‘Right Click’ on the file then ‘Rename’, which will highlight the file with a blinking cursor, then type the new name and hit ‘Enter’.

Example: Rename 33.wav to something like 33cs.wav

3. Find and copy the new sound you want to use.

Example: Say you want to use sound 220.wav as the new tank movement sound. Highlight the 220.wav file, then ‘Right Click’ then ‘Copy’.

4. Go to Desktop, then ‘Right Click’ and ‘Paste’.

Example: File 220.wav should now appear on your ‘Desktop’.

5. Rename the new file on your ‘desktop’ to the sound you identified in step 1.

Example: Rename 220.wav to 33.wav

6. Move the new file from your desktop to the Sounds folder.

Example: Right Click on the 33.wav file on your desktop, then ‘Cut’ (by cutting instead of copying, you will remove the file from your desktop) then go into the WinSP ‘Sounds’ folder and ‘Right Click’ and ‘Paste’. Windows should NOT ask you if you want to replace the 33.wav because you already renamed the original file.

You’re done.

Now, in your Sounds folder – when sorted by name – you should have 33.wav and 33cs.wav right next to each other.
The game will only use the file named 33.wav. So if you want to go back, just rename the 33.wav to 33b.wav then rename the 33cs.wav to 33.wav and you’re back to the Cross Sounds sound.
