I have found that when using explicit supply, moving supply units randomly causes them to lose vehicles. Why is this happening? Is it due to the breakdown rule?
Yes, outside of airstrikes obviously, the random disappearance is due to breakdown.

Yes, the supply vehicles are breaking down according to the breakdown rule %. Just try not to move them as much as possible. This problem is especially bad (realistically so) for the Italians in Compass '40; the further they advance the greater the possibility that all their supply trucks break down before they get to the front lines.
Nice timing Rick. ;)
A lot scenarios start the supply units at the edge of the board. So by the time that they get to where they are needed, they are already depleted. I presume that the horse drawn units are affected by this also; so they are particularly prone to depletion since it takes many turns to arrive at places where they are needed.

Another thing to watch out for in my B'44 campaign game.
I always rationalized it as consumption and wastage myself.
Then would the Supply units be subject to recovery of losses if they sat idle?

Imagining quarter masters driving up and down the roads collecting supplies that fell off the trucks/wagons. Big Grin

Good question - hadn't thought of that - be worth checking into. But I doubt they do recover - but it is worth doing a test on.

I was always a big fan of supply trucks, and used them whenever possible, and although my mind is hazy, I don't remember them ever regaining 'strength"
They don't regain strength. Once lost, they stay lost!
