I play with all sounds off.

How much intel do you players get from the sounds of unseen, moving, enemy units?

In another thread, a player states light tanks can be used to make his opponents think he has heavier tanks.
I use sound alot, particularly in desperate situations. I clearly recall one game where my opponent told me after the scenario that he did not try to counterattack a sector containing my (unknown to him) weakened forces because he feared an ambush. I was pretty desperate. My force had been spent just getting where they were and I had seen my opponents forces slowly growing opposite them. I figured a counter was coming but I really had nothing to send to the area. So I kept moving German RSO carriers back and forth behind the line out of his LOS. The RSO carriers of course use the same sound file as armor. I had 4 carriers, I would move each one hex, change to the next, move that one hex, and so on until all their movement was used up. Since I would move each carrier only one hex and then change to the next one, I knew it would cause multiple plays of the armored movement file giving the impression that I had large amounts of armor moving into position out of his LOS. It worked. Sometimes you can bluff in tough situations and it works. :smoke: Of course if your opponent doesn't watch replays you're screwed. Big Grin

One thing I have noticed is there seems to be a range beyond units will not hear sounds. Maybe four or five hexes? That's the rule of thumb I use. Anybody know how far sounds carry in the game?
I use my bicycle troops with cards in the spokes to invoke the fear of the Valkerye in the enemy...

umbro
I move artillery tractors back and forth to simulate the sound of tanks moving. They are usually the last tank sound I have by games end.
Then again, like Umbro, it scared the crap out of someone when they thought my bicycle troops were flying in on Huey's!
Just move the bikes around on hidden roads. Let them count the rotor blades to get an idea of how many you have? ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I guess that puts me at a handicap when playing a human opponent.
I also play with the sound off.

I also almost never watch replays, so it is no big deal for me.

Thanx!

Hawk
Dang! Eek
And, here I thought I was foolin' ya Hawk! :chin:

I play with the sound off. The sounds of battle irritate the hell out of my wife. or they attract a child that otherwise would have remained in another room. I was aware other players used sound to confuse, so I don't really consider it a handicap.

I do watch the replays. I would think not watching the replays would be a handicap. However, with really large scenarios, which I rarely play, I'm tempted to forego the replay.
thats exactly how i play, the large ones i seldom watch , i love the sound loud as i can take it. Scares the hell out of me when i move and a unseen unit pops off.:boom3::jaw: I also really like the music to WF. Great Stuff.cheers

Maybe use headphones for that "surround sound" effect... and reduce interdiction by wife and kids? :smoke:

I like to play with the sound = ON for a more immersive experience. Again, a good pair of headphones really enhances the battle sounds.

I get a lot of benefit out of watching the replays (even the large scenarios) since you can see your opponent's units moving into positions... even if the units don't remain visible for their entire movement phase. You also get a better feel for the "ebb and flow" of your battle. Both these observations are negated when you skip the replay.

I did not watch replays in one of my PBeM games... and it was like watching a scene in a movie "skip" around. One turn I would have tanks firing on a target... the next "scene" (turn) a couple of these same armor units were "brewed up" with no evidence of how it happened! :chin: Eek IMO, not a recommended way to play PBeM matches! :smoke: BTW... I lost that PBeM game.
