I just received Gallic Wars and have been playing against the AI, and am repeatedly having my head handed to me on a plate.

Anyone have some information on tactics and information that is a "must know" on the quirks of the game?

:conf:
Hi.

A lot of facts have to be taken into consideration.
Tactic depends on the side your playing.

- keep your units together in battle formation, in command range of
their leader, otherwise they´ll get fixed.
- try to attack from the flank or if the opportunity is given from the
rear. Never take on greek phalanx from the front or your men will
be killed by approx. 7 m long pikes.
attack elephants with LI only, particulary your Cavalry has to avoid
contact. Keep unshielded troops out of archers fire range.
Before your HI engages the enemy form a wedge ( not allowed for
pikemen ).
- do not split into very small units, as they´ll suffer from high fatigue
soon.
- move your commander near routing units, you´ll get a better
chance to rally
- try to retreat units suffering from high fatigue, they´ll recover.
- read about Hannibal, Scipio etc.. Study battles like Cannae, Zama,
Ilipa,Trebia etc. to understand the combined arms warfare of
ancient times.

Thanks!

I am well familiar with warfare in antiquity; it's the game mechanics that seem a bit abstract. However, I have won two in a row now against the AI, so I am learning the game mechanics.

Been playing Ponts vs Romans. :smoke:

What's the link to the site you mention?

Hi.

That´s the link I´ve mentioned.

You can join one of 4 different fractions, Romans, Carthaginians, Greeks or Celts. Soon the club will start a club campaign, when the Multiplayer Zama tourney is finished.

Thanks Klaus,

I am on their list now.

More practice, and then a game.

Hi.

Which fraction have you joined ?

Forgotten to mention, I´m the Leader of the Greeks and recruits for my side are really appreciated Big Grin:whis:Big Grin

Dean will contact you soon, I assume.

Take care, Klaus
Roman, of course!

Had to; I'm a big fan of Caesar's campaigns, but once again, just had my head handed to me on a platter twice vs, the Ponts.

:stir:
Good luck to you.
You´ll find some very good guys throughout the Roman World of
AWWC. But beware of the Greeks, we feel no sympathy for RomeBig Grin:mad:Big Grin
