What is your real name?
Edward Gutting

How did you decide upon your Blitz nickname?
Rome was sacked by Gauls in 386 BC led by Brennus. The Gauls demand a large sum of gold before they left. The Romans brought their gold, and it was weighed out on a counter-weight balance scale. The Romans accused the Gauls of using fradulent counterweights that were heavier than marked. Brennus responded to the accusation by saying, 'Vae Victis' which means 'Woe to the conquered' in Latin. He then threw his sword onto the scale, increasing even more the weight which they Romans had to match with their gold.

What ladders are you represented on?
Ancient Wars, PzC, TOAW, Campaign series. Only active on PzC though.

What is your favourite PC War-game?
TOAW has a special place in my heart, but I don't play anything but PzC anymore.

Who has been your hardest opponent?
I have not won a game yet, so everyone seems impossibly hard so far!

How long have you been a member of the Blitz?
May 1, 2001. I played Campaign series and TOAW, then took a multi-year break. Kept checking in on the forum, though.

What War interests you the most?
World War II

If you could choose to be present at one military historical event what would it be?
I hope to never see any war, not even as a spectator, so I'll answer none.

What is your favourite War movie?
Too hard to pick -- a lot of good Vietnam movies out there. I want to see a Bridge Too Far again, last saw it as a kid.

What do you snack on while gaming?
Have a beer or two.

What is your favourite and least favourite aspect of the Blitz website?
Least favorite: The forum could use more discussion of the games in addition to being a place to find opponents.

Favorite: Everyone I have met has been a gentlemen and very interesting to boot!

Do you own any war memorabilia?
When I was young I had my Uncle Kevin's sailor cap from Vietnam. I'm afraid I'm not sure where it is anymore, but it has to be around somewhere (maybe at my parents house?).

What is the best military book you have read?
Sajer, "The Forgotten Soldier". If you read this, you will have nightmares about what it was like to serve on as a German soldier on the Eastern Front. I can't think of another book that conveys so effectively what it is like to fight modern war.

What do you think was the single most important event of WWII?
Russians turning the tide at Stalingrad.

What is the most interesting military documentary you have ever watched?
Don't watch much TV, can't think of one off the top of my head.

Which is your favourite HPS PzC title?
Minsk '44

Are there any war games catching your eye at present?
Eagerly awaiting arrival of GMT's 'Kiev to Rostov'. Three mapper, takes their east front series to Dec. 1941.
I have to finish my World in Flames game first, though, so as to clear table room.

I just played Schutze Games' 'First Strike' by Bruce Costello. Excellent simulation of global thermonuclear war set in 1983.

What piece of wisdom would you like to pass on to your fellow Blitz members?
Try playing the games just for the history rather than a competition. Both are fun, but the former opens one up to a wide variety of unbalanced scenarios that can teach you a lot about operational warfare in the Second World War.
"The Forgotten Soldier" is a great book. :)
An even better book than FS is "Berlin: Dance of death". Now that is a great book.
