Is there any way of getting the single hex house you want when making a map without clicking away at the mouse like... well, you know what I mean.

The short answer is...no.
It's a PITA the way that system works.
IIRC there is a way to 'lock' the icon once you have the one you want...but that is only useful if you wish to lay down a bunch of the same house.
I cannot remember the hot key...it'll be in the help menu.

Locking the icon will at least save SOME time, thanks very much.
In WaW or H2H there were maps which had every building and their code, pressing some button you could enter the code and have a building you wanted on the hex ... wish I could tell you how it works but can't remember.
