I've started adding all of the GHQ units to my France 40 OOB. There are no 10cm Kanone or 21cm Morser units in the components list. I added them, practically giggling. I've also collected some pretty good bitmaps over the years. I brought one up and tried to 'save as'. But the units I added don't come up as an option. Only the originals show. How can I find them please? Let me thank you again for the insights so far. I just can't get over the possibilities that are opened up.
I was going to answer your question but since you specifically addressed it to Glenn, then I will not answer. ;)
Seriously though, where is the "save as" selection you are referring to? If you are talking about "save as" in the file menu that that does nothing other than save the OOB file name "as" something of another name. If you used this feature then all you did is save an OOB named "21cm Morser" into the nationality folder that you are trying to create this unit for.
All you need to do is put in whatever value you want in the boxes and then type in a name where the component name drop down list is. This name can be whatever you want but it should have characters which do not violate filename conventions since this name will be the name of the .bmp file that it uses for the unit's portrait. There are some tricks to the component / filenames, but I would just avoid all that by keeping the names simple.
Once you have the name and values that you want, in the "Org/Unit Dialog" box, then simple press the button at the bottom that says "Save". Once you do that, the unit will show up in the component list FOR THAT NATIONALITY. You will need to "Save" each one to other nationalities if you want them to show up for them as well.
The OOB editor does have a help file that states most of this information, although I admit that it is the bare minimum information available.
Thanks, Volcano man. I asked Glenn because I'm trying to be as little a bother to the community as possible. But this is all so cool that I'm going to beg as much info as I can, any way I can. I did get the unit, say the 10cm Kanone, with all it's values, set up, and then I saved. Then I go to My computer. Inside my HPS folder I have another folder, Misc, where I keep all the bitmaps I've collected. I click on the 10cm. Then I hit 'save as' in the file menu. A menu comes up. I go down to the HPS folder, then F40, then units, and it's not there. If I can get a grip on all this, the first scenario I put out, hopefully, will be the Soviet counter-offensive for Moscow 41.
Just leave the "file > save as" feature alone, all it does is save your OOB as a filename of your choice. When you do that, it saved EVERYTHING in the OOB to a file just as if you saved an entire document in Word or Excel, not just a single paragraph of the document. What you are concerned with is the components, which is saved as I described above.
In regards to images, the only thing you have to do to get the image to show up is make sure that your image filename matches the component name *exactly* and then put the image into the nationality folder that the unit belongs to. In other words, if you made a component called "21cm Morser", and lets say the unit is German nationality, then you make an image file "21cm Morser.bmp" and put it in the ...\German\Units folder. The image should show up when the OOB is loaded. Depending on how you made the image, it may or may not show up as you intend it to look but that is a different issue altogether.
Don't worry about asking questions, the community here is usually helpful and patient. Glenn can be busy at times (as am I), so don't count on answers from a single person all the time.
A lityle detail to consider when naming your components - especially with ARTY
you want say *in* and not * " * for inches as you can't use * " * in a filename even though the editor will allow it. Likewise avoid special characters like & or even umlauts ect. Again these will work sometimes and might appear to be fine on your PC but not someone elses who might have a eastern european or other operating system or the like.

Thanks so much guys. For years, whenever I hit a snag, I just quit trying. Volcano Man, I haven't had a chance to try it out, but I believe your method will work fine for me. This is just so cool. Pretty soon I'll have all the ad hoc KG's on the Chir into my S42 OOB, something I've been salivating over for some time.
