I know the answer to most of this question, but sometimes get confused with the terminology. This can be a major problem when one unloads an artillery piece only to find it cannot fire indirectly:
Which of the following units can fire indirectly:
Assault guns
Howitzers
Mortars
AT guns
Rockets
Infantry guns
Field guns
Mountain guns
Recoilless guns
AA guns

The funny thing is that I've seen footage of Shermans in plowed positions that allowed their guns to be eleveated over spec, to allow them to "indirect fire". I am certain the the effectiveness of this was not great.
German assault guns were part of the artillery branch but, most did not indirect fire.
And, I've seen footage of what looked like a German 88mm AA gun that was used in the artillery role. But, it might have been a special use?
As far as I know most assault guns,AT guns, and AA guns cannot fire indirectly.......all the rest can.......but infantry guns aren't very good at that either.....in fact I have found them lucky to hit the ground..........I did not include Self-propelled arty as assault guns......they can also fire indirectly.

Of course I think the Germans used the 88 as an indirect fire weapon also..but that is one of those realistic thingys :-)

I put SP arty under the field arty category. The Sherman 105 does break that mold along with the Stuart born 75 mm arty. The Stuart-arty, though, can shoot indirectly.
BTW if a unit can fire indirectly it has a little mortar icon on the lower left side of the unit box.
