Yes 66 years and finally found....seems the German freighter and the Sydney engaged at point blank range hence both sunk(both had torpedoes as well)......
No life boat wreckage found maybe blown to pieces in engagement and is why no survivors from Sydney.

I have fairly good knowledge of WW2 and this event had slipped me by, looking on the net is seems that a few bits of wreakage and a body in a liferaft were found in the next few weeks after the engagement, but the body was never linked 100% with the ship, so all 600+ men may be still be in the ship?
Thanks for this, very interesting....:)

It is a very interesting event that happened in this part of the world. And in 1941 another Leander class light cruiser was almost ambushed again, in the Indian Ocean. The HMNZS Leander found the Italian raider Ramb1. The Captain of the HMNZS Leander closed to within 3000 yards before the Italian raised their flag and opened fire. Luckily the Kiwi cruiser won the battle but it could have easily been another Sydney.

Ahh very interesting thanks
The Battle of Calabria was what Sydney II was famous for having beaten off some Italian cruisers......until of course Sydneys' unfortunate demise
The battle here : http://www.navy.gov.au/spc/history/ships/sydney2.html
We have another missing ship off the coast of Queensland the Centaur (hospital ship) sunk by a japanese submarine...calls for its finding are being voiced now.
The centaur was involved in rescuing german survivors from the Kormoran that was engaged in battle with Sydney
