ARTILLERY has been called " The Queen of the Battlefiled" but it needs skilful handling for best effect. I have combined Blitz players' comments over the years (thank you all, especially Otlig) with my own observations in my next three posts. They are respectively INDIRECT FIRE, DIRECT FIRE AND OPFIRE. I have done this because otherwise it would have been one huge post Comments on each and their interrelationships should enable us to build a classic Article to help us all

I have included Mortars with the guns but have not considered smoke as Panzermeyer covered it very well in his Blitz article
Artillery is the KING of the battle. Infantry is the queen.
Accepted. Some would say that Tanks are kings but really it comes down to combined arms which vary in importance as the action proceeds.
I'm glad my comment caused a small debate as I was trying to stir up contributions to the ways we have found to use Artillery.
Sadly the current type of warfare seems to mainly involve Infantry with support in APC's and Helicopters and very little need for Main Battle Tanks or Artillery.
Just to set the record straight :soap:: the Infantry has the unchallenged and exclusive claim to the title "Queen of Battle"50cal.
Artillery has been called "the last resort of Kings" and claims the title "King of Battle".

An old Chief of Smoke Sgt once told me why: "Sir, the King puts the balls where the Queen wants them"!:whis:

Our patron Saint is St. Barbara , as all those who have partaken of fine "Artillery Punch" on St. Barbara's DayParty well know!

"Steel Behind the Rock" (Motto of the U.S. 38th Artillery Regiment)cheers
